A Compositionally Architecture for Perceptual Feature Grouping
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a compositionality architecture for perceptual organization which establishes a novel, generic, algorithmic framework for feature binding and condensation of semantic information in images. The underlying algorithmic ideas require a hierarchical structure for various types of objects and their groupings, which are guided by gestalt laws from psychology. A rich set of predefined feature detectors with uncertainty that perform real-valued measurements of relationships between objects can be combined in this flexible Bayesian framework. Compositions are inferred by minimizing the negative posterior grouping probability. The model structure is founded on the fundamental perceptual law of Prägnanz. The grouping algorithm performs hierarchical agglomerative clustering and it is rendered computationally feasible by visual pop-out. Evaluation on the edgel grouping task confirms the robustness of the architecture and its applicability to grouping in various visual scenarios.

Perceptual Grouping Enhances Visual Plasticity
Visual perceptual learning, a manifestation of neural plasticity, refers to improvements in performance on a visual task achieved by training. Attention is known to play an important role in perceptual learning, given that the observer's discriminative ability improves only for those stimulus feature that are attended. However, the distribution of attention can be severely constrained by percep...

Feature extraction is a main step in all perceptual image hashing schemes in which robust features will led to better results in perceptual robustness. Simplicity, discriminative power, computational efficiency and robustness to illumination changes are counted as distinguished properties of Local Binary Pattern features. In this paper, we investigate the use of local binary patterns for percep...
متن کاملEfficient Visual Search without Top-down or Bottom-up Guidance: A Putative Role for Perceptual Organization
Two types of mechanisms have dominated theoretical accounts of efficient visual search. First are bottom-up processes related to the hypothesized characteristics of retinotopic feature maps. Second are top-down mechanisms related to feature selection. Little effort has been made to understand visual search in terms of perceptual grouping despite its acknowledged importance in general visual per...
متن کاملAdditivity of Feature-Based and Symmetry-Based Grouping Effects in Multiple Object Tracking
Multiple object tracking (MOT) is an attentional process wherein people track several moving targets among several distractors. Symmetry, an important indicator of regularity, is a general spatial pattern observed in natural and artificial scenes. According to the "laws of perceptual organization" proposed by Gestalt psychologists, regularity is a principle of perceptual grouping, such as simil...
متن کاملIncremental grouping of image elements in vision
One important task for the visual system is to group image elements that belong to an object and to segregate them from other objects and the background. We here present an incremental grouping theory (IGT) that addresses the role of object-based attention in perceptual grouping at a psychological level and, at the same time, outlines the mechanisms for grouping at the neurophysiological level....
